What Are Allergies?

Allergies are the reaction that our bodies take when an allergen (pet dander, pollen, dust, etc.) enters or makes contact with us. Allergic reactions are immune system responses to these allergens, often aggressively attacking them due to mistakenly identifying them as a harmful substance. Allergic reactions can be the result of family history or asthma, has a variety of symptoms (such as sneezing or vomiting), and can vary in severity. Common allergy symptoms:

  • Coughing or wheezing

  • Flaky or red skin

  • Hives or rash

  • Itchy eyes, nose, or skin

  • Runny nose

  • Sneezing

  • Swelling in face, lips, throat, or tongue

  • Tingling mouth

  • Watery eyes

In addition, severe cases of allergies can result in anaphylaxis and require immediate emergency medical attention. If any of these signs of anaphylaxis are present, call 9-1-1 immediately (and use an epinephrine auto-injector—EpiPen, for example—if available):

  • Blood pressure drop

  • Lightheadedness

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Skin rash

  • Vomiting

Allergies are common occurrences, as 30-40% of people will have an allergy at some point in their lives. The best step to improving one's immunology and resolving allergy symptoms is to make an appointment at an allergy clinic to see an allergy doctor. Allergy doctors, like ours at the Providence Clinic, can help identify what allergies are present, how they are impacting your immunology, and what steps to take next to improve your health. If you have symptoms that resemble allergies, contact an allergy clinic as soon as possible.

What Causes Allergies?

Allergies are caused by two things: an allergen and an oversensitive immune response in the body to an allergen. There are a variety of allergen types, which include multiple allergy triggers:

  • Airborne (dust, mold, pet dander, pollen, etc.)

  • Foods (eggs, fish, milk, nuts, wheat, soy, etc.)

  • Insects (stings from bees and wasps)

  • Medicines (specifically penicillin)

  • Touchable Substances (specifically latex)

While there are more allergens than these, this may be useful in identifying a potential allergy. By visiting an allergy physician or allergy clinic and learning more about symptoms, you can better understand how allergies affect you and learn how to treat or respond to allergic reactions.

These allergens are particularly impactful towards children, who are more prone to having an allergy. Children also may outgrow an allergy they've developed altogether. Allergy clinics like ours in Morristown, TN, can help determine what may be causing allergies in children as well.

Allergy Testing

The first step to getting better from an allergy-related symptom is to get allergy testing. Allergy testing can be completed on someone with active symptoms or on a symptom-free individual to determine what potential allergens can trigger an allergic reaction in the person. Especially in children, allergy testing can help prevent emergency medical care or a life-threatening situation from occurring.

Allergy testing can be performed by an allergy clinic or allergy doctor. Most allergy testing procedures involve a skin allergy test or a blood test for allergies, including food sensitivity testing, a milk allergy test, and more. Skin allergy tests are typically quicker, more affordable, and more reliable than blood tests, but individual needs vary and an allergy doctor can help determine which test is best.

Allergy Treatment

Once an allergy or allergies have been identified by an allergist, an allergy treatment plan can be created to reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms. There are two types of allergy treatment: immunotherapy and medication.

Immunotherapy allergy treatment by an allergist consists of routinely introducing the affected individual's immune system to the problem allergen(s), typically bee venom, dust, or pollen, in an effort to increase the body's tolerance of the allergen. The less sensitive the body's immune system becomes to the allergen, the less it will respond when it comes in contact with it, and fewer allergy symptoms will result. Immunotherapy is typically administered by allergy shots, allergy tablets, or allergy drops. Not everyone is a candidate for immunotherapy, however, so we recommend contacting an allergist or allergy clinic (like our Hamblen County facility) to determine what your needs may be.

Medication allergy treatment plans can range from over the counter decongestants and antihistamines to stronger corticosteroids. Allergy medications may be a good option when avoiding an allergen is not an option. Consult with an allergy doctor at the Providence Clinic for an allergy treatment plan to help improve health, reduce allergy symptoms, and minimize side effects.

Allergy Clinic & Allergy Doctors

Allergy problems may be improved with proper allergy testing and allergy treatment plans by an expert allergist or allergy clinic. Because of the consistent impact allergies can have on a person's life, it is important to talk with an allergy doctor or immunology doctor about any allergy symptoms or allergy problems as soon as possible.
